LocalAI#
LocalAI is a method of serving models
through an OpenAI API spec-compatible REST API.
LlamaIndex can use its OpenAILike
LLM to directly interact with a LocalAI server.
Setting Up LocalAI#
First, let’s get LocalAI set up locally.
git clone [email protected]:mudler/LocalAI.git
cd LocalAI
git checkout tags/v1.40.0
Next, let’s start the LocalAI server on localhost
and download the lunademo
model.
When running docker compose up
, it will actually
build the LocalAI container locally, which can take some time.
Pre-built Docker images exist for several platforms as of v1.40.0,
but not all, so this tutorial locally builds for greater applicability.
docker compose up --detach
curl http://localhost:8080/models/apply -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{
"id": "model-gallery@lunademo"
}'
Use the printed output’s job ID with curl -s http://localhost:8080/models/jobs/123abc
to monitor the model download, depending on your download speeds,
it may take several minutes. To list the downloaded models:
curl http://localhost:8080/v1/models
Manual Interaction#
After the server is running, we can test it outside of LlamaIndex. The actual chat invocation may take several minutes (on a 2021 MacBook Pro with M1 chip and 16-GB RAM, it once took six minutes), depending on the model being used and your compute hardware:
> ls -l models
total 7995504
-rw-r--r-- 1 user staff 4081004256 Nov 26 11:28 luna-ai-llama2-uncensored.Q4_K_M.gguf
-rw-r--r-- 1 user staff 23 Nov 26 11:28 luna-chat-message.tmpl
-rw-r--r-- 1 user staff 175 Nov 26 11:28 lunademo.yaml
> curl -X POST http://localhost:8080/v1/chat/completions -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{
"model": "lunademo",
"messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "How are you?"}],

}'

LlamaIndex Interaction#
Now, let’s get to coding:
from llama_index.llms import LOCALAI_DEFAULTS, ChatMessage, OpenAILike
MAC_M1_LUNADEMO_CONSERVATIVE_TIMEOUT = 10 * 60 # sec
model = OpenAILike(
**LOCALAI_DEFAULTS,
model="lunademo",
is_chat_model=True,
timeout=MAC_M1_LUNADEMO_CONSERVATIVE_TIMEOUT,
)
response = model.chat(messages=[ChatMessage(content="How are you?")])
print(response)
assistant: I'm doing well, thank you. How about yourself?
Do you have any questions or concerns regarding your health?
